Brandon, Florida is named for John Brandon, who moved here in 1858 when the area was still known as New Hope. After John's death in 1886, his second wife, Victoria, took a leading role in the community. Her home became the community's first post office and she became the postmistress. A civil engineer for the railroad laid out a town site, and Victoria asked him to name the town Brandon, FL after John Brandon.
Brandon, which is unincorporated, is located in Hillsborough County, on Florida's balmy Gulf Coast. It is in the Tampa Bay area, approximately halfway between Tampa and Plant City. Brandon, FL is bordered by Interstate 75 to the west, Valrico to the east, Riverview to the south, and Seffner to the north. The community is easily accessible from Interstate 4 and Interstate 75.
In 2000, the US Census Bureau listed Brandon, Florida as having a population of 77,895 residents. The American Community Survey estimates the population of Brandon, FL to have risen to 90,550 residents. The median household income was $51,639, significantly higher than the national median household income of $41,994.
