Tampa, Florida
Tampa, Florida, located on FL's coveted west-central
Gulf coast on Tampa Bay, is the seat of Hillsborough
County. The 2006 census estimates for Tampa make it the
54th largest city in the U.S., with a population of
332,888. The City of Tampa and the surrounding
communities are referred to as the Tampa Bay Area.
In 2008, Tampa was awarded such distinctions as the “8th
cleanest city in America,” and Forbes Magazine called it
“the 5th best outdoor city."
Tampa Bay, Florida
The Tampa Bay, FL region attracts millions of tourists
each year, who flock to the area for the mild winter
climates, tropical summers, spectacular sunsets and
beautiful beaches. Tourism thrives with a multitude of
cultural and entertainment attractions. Must-see
attractions in the Tampa Bay, Florida area include such
favorites as Busch Gardens, the Florida Aquarium, Museum
of Science & Industry and the Lowry Park Zoo.
Brandon, Florida
Brandon, Florida is named for John Brandon, who moved
here in 1858 when the area was still known as New Hope.
After John's death in 1886, his second wife, Victoria,
took a leading role in the community. Her home became
the community's first post office and she became the
postmistress. A civil engineer for the railroad laid out
a town site, and Victoria asked him to name the town
Brandon, FL after John Brandon.
Hillsborough County, Florida
Hillsborough County, Florida enjoys bright sunshine,
cool breezes and deep blue skies. Not surprisingly,
there is an abundance of outdoor recreation. The
Hillsborough River, stretching 56 miles in Hillsborough
County, offers endless activities including swimming,
canoeing, fishing, camping and hiking. Hillsborough
boasts two state parks -- the Alafia River State Park,
and the Hillsborough River State Park.
Plant City, Florida
A mild subtropical climate, fertile soil and a good
transportation infrastructure is the perfect recipe for
agricultural prosperity in Plant City, FL. You will find
aromatic citrus groves and a picturesque quilt of
pasturelands dotting the landscape. As the winter
strawberry capital of the world, Plant City proudly
hosts the annual Florida Strawberry Festival, which is
attended by people from all over the United States as
well as many from around the world.
Riverview, Florida
Riverview, Florida was founded in 1856 on the shore of
the beautiful Alafia River. From the ancient
Native American term meaning "River of Fire," the Alafia
River contained so many strains of phosphorous that the
river would appear to light up at night. One side
of the river was originally called Peru, the Native
American name for “straight part of the river.”
Thonotosassa,
Florida
Thonotosassa, Florida derives its name from the Seminole
Creek Indian words thlonto and sasse, meaning "an
important place for flint." The community took root on a
road connecting Fort Brook in Tampa, FL and Fort King in
Ocala, FL at Lake Thonotosassa. After the end of the
Second Seminole War in 1842, early settlers founded Fort
Foster, which tells the history of the Seminole Wars in
Florida.
