Hillsborough County, Florida was created on January 25, 1834 from Alachua and Monroe counties. One of 67 counties in Florida, Hillsborough is named for Wills Hill, Viscount Hillsborough of England. The county seat is Tampa, FL. Hillsborough County is the largest county in the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Despite its large population, most of the area of the county is unincorporated, and falls directly under the county government's jurisdiction.
