Riverview, Florida was founded in 1856 on the shore of the beautiful Alafia River. From the ancient Native American term meaning "River of Fire," the Alafia River contained so many strains of phosphorous that the river would appear to light up at night. One side of the river was originally called Peru, the Native American name for “straight part of the river.” Phosphate was mined here by the Peruvian Mining Company. A river ferry connected the Riverview and Peru communities until they merged n the 1940's.
