Thonotosassa, Florida derives its name from the Seminole Creek Indian words thlonto and sasse, meaning "an important place for flint." The community took root on a road connecting Fort Brook in Tampa, FL and Fort King in Ocala, FL  at Lake Thonotosassa. After the end of the Second Seminole War in 1842, early settlers founded Fort Foster, which tells the history of the Seminole Wars in Florida.

The community is located at latitude 28.061 and longitude -82.302. Thonotosassa, FL is approximately 73 miles from Orlando and about 10 miles from Plant City, Florida.

The Hillsborough River State Park is located in Thonotosassa, Florida. The park opened in 1938, and was one of Florida’s first state parks.  The park is divided by the swiftly flowing Hillsborough River,  which provides opportunities for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking. Hikers have their choice of four nature trails. The Wetlands Restoration Trail is open to bicyclists and hikers.

US 301 is the largest major highway in and around Thonotosassa ,Florida. Train service is available via Amtrak in Tampa (the station is 14 miles from Thonotosassa). The closest major airport is the Tampa International Airport, also located in Tampa.

Thonotosassa's schools include the Thonotosassa Elementary School and the Folsom Elementary School.

Thonotosassa is a close neighbor of Tampa and Tampa is home to the prestigious MacDill AFB, which boasts "America's Most Responsive, Reliable and Renowned Mobility Wing the 6th AMW." The 6th AMW is a 3,000-person force capable of rapidly projecting air refueling power anywhere in the world. Five unique groups carry out their mission to be America’s premier mobility team providing world-class air refueling, responsive airlift and airbase support to Headquarters U.S. Central Command, Headquarters U.S. Special Operations Command, and 51 other mission partners that call MacDill home.

Thonotosassa is served by the judges and staff of the 13th Judicial Circuit, which is comprised entirely of Hillsborough County, Florida. The largest and busiest division within the 13th Judicial Circuit is that of Family Law. The Hillsborough County Family Law division handles many types of cases under their area of responsibility. Issues range from name changes and adoption, paternity, child support and custody, domestic violence, divorce and more.  Being a military area, Hillsborough County Family law also deals with the special circumstances surrounding divorce for active and retired military personnel.
